Soul

• [Definition] [Eternal and distinct from matter] In Hinduism, the soul is eternal, conscious, and distinct from the material body; it is the true self of every living being, the absolute and unchanging core beneath the changing body and mind, untouched by decay, pleasure, pain, and death. Even across many lifetimes, the soul does not fundamentally change; only the body and conditioning change.
• • [MYTAKE] [I praise absolute anchors] Since so many things in life are ephemeral, I praise the search of a human component that is absolute, it makes me take the human being more serious, otherwise it seems completely meaningless, like a wind that comes and goes.
• [Souls are not good or bad] In the Bhagavad Gita, the soul (ātman) itself is not morally good or bad in the ordinary sense. Its intrinsic nature is spiritual and pure; moral corruption belongs to its conditioned consciousness and actions, not to the essence of the soul. A useful distinction is: Soul ≠ character
• • [MYTAKE] [Differences with chrsitianity] In Christianity the soul itself can be spiritually and morally transformed—affected by sin, grace, and sanctification. After death the soul is judged and sent to heaven or hell. Whereas in Hinduism the soul itself is immutable. I can't see any practical difference in the way people live their lives given these two different premises, but I think it's an interesting metaphysical difference.
• [Metaphor] The body is compared to garments for a soul that are cast off and replaced after death.
• • [MYTAKE] I love this metaphor, it helps mentalize the the difference between the body and the soul.
• [Relationship of consciousness to the soul] The soul (ātman) is the conscious self, and consciousness (cetanā) is the soul’s manifested awareness.
• • [MYTAKE] [Relationship to improving other lives and metaphysics] Improving someone's life doesn't impact their soul, but it does impact their consciousness, which is the soul's manifested awareness. So the impact is not that large because it's not absolute (soul impacting), but it's also not that small because it's not only material.
• [Soul Destiny after death] The soul is eternal and continues to exist after the death of the body. It is reborn in a new body according to its karma, until it achieves liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death (saṃsāra).
• • [MYTAKE] [Comparing mercy in Hinduism and Christianity] I’m not sure which religion is more merciful. Hinduism offers repeated chances through saṃsāra, but moksha is rarely reached in practice. Christianity offers one life, but if one is saved, salvation is permanent; if not, damnation is final. Both are merciful in different ways, but in very different senses. I find it hard to evaluate which is more merciful.

The Human condition

Demoniac Nature (Āsurī)

• [Sense gratification as highest good] The demoniac orientation treats sense gratification as life's highest goal.
• • [MYTAKE] [Similarities with modern day hedonism] The philosophical traditions more dominant in today's secular society are the expressive individualism and hedonism ("o culto a felicidade" specially among young people), and both of them are very similar to the demoniac orientation, because they treat senses as the source of truth, not as a reference, as life's highest goal. Whereas in Hinduism the senses can be as much as an illusion as a signal. Pure conscioussness is the source of truth, senses are references.
• [Material advancement ≠ true progress] Material and technological advancement are mistaken for genuine human progress when they do not produce spiritual advancement.
• • [MYTAKE] [GDP is a historical invention] This is a very important point, people take for granted the idea that GDP is a great political and social indicator, when that is far from obvious, the only reason why it's a good indicator is because people believe a lot in money, so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Karma

Desire and attachment

• Higher taste displaces lower desire
• • [MYTAKE] [Friends doing debauchery me studying math] This is something I highly agree with because meanwhile some of my friends focused on debauchery during their 20s, I was still studying math, since I had a higher taste I didn't want to engage in these lower desires, similarly if you truly see Krishna then you will not want to engage in materially lower desires.
• Inverse Spiritual and Material Value Perception
• • [MYTAKE] [Spiritual depth > perks] I agree with this so much, for example when I started to work in person in the Microsoft headquarters, I saw so many Hindu people, and for me their religion, and their knowledge regarding ultimate reality was much more interesting than the material compensation and other wordly things. Whereas other peers were way more interested in sking, and the money. My experience is an example that spiritual value and material value have inverse perceptions

Suffering and bondage

• Māyā as misdirection of intelligence
• • [MYTAKE] [Wrong premises create suffering and increase with intelligence] This is so important. Intelligence is only useful when it is guided by the right premises. Without enough emotional intelligence, a person can make a profoundly wrong decision—like chasing more money despite already having plenty, while neglecting their family—creating suffering for themselves and others.

Karmic Bondage

• [Bondage Cycle] [Definition] A self-reinforcing causal loop in which a response to pressure produces an immediate benefit that strengthens the tendency/capacity to repeat that response, while simultaneously generating latent costs that later create additional pressure for further responses.

[MYTAKE] [Example of systemic suffering] This is probably my favourite part of Hinduism. When I look at the suffering in society, I see a large web of interconnected bondage cycles, not just isolated acts of individuals. For example, in Caruaru, I see women in unstable families without solid father figures; those women often turn to debauchery, which then contributes to more unstable families. At the same time, the men lack meaningful projects, such as stable work, so they also fall into debauchery. One reason they lack direction is that the government does not plan the economy well. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle of suffering that connects many people. To solve it, we cannot simply punish the debauched youth; we must create meaningful projects, stable families, and broader social conditions that support people. Ultimately, the suffering of the whole society is interconnected, by each individual's bondage cycle, one bondage cycle doesn't cause so much suffering, but the summation of 400 000 people in bondage cycles creates a lot of suffering

[MYTAKE] [Composure under pressure is key] Composure under pressure is the most critical skill for avoiding the bondage cycle, since it allows one to respond to pressure with a more considered and less reactive approach. In other words, BJJ can be key to a good life, because it teaches how to get rid of the bondage cycles.

Samsara

• Assignment of the Next Body
• [MYTAKE] [Scary] I will never see a plant in the same way again given that it could be a human soul in a previous life.

• Time-tested ethical and spiritual principles rather than acting solely according to personal desires.
• • [MYTAKE] [Long term good emotions optimization] This reminds me a lot of Crime and Punishment

Yoga

• [MYTAKE] [Wrong definition of Yoga by me] Before reading the book I was so ignorant that I thought yoga was just a physical exercise, but now I understand that it is a spiritual discipline that encompasses action, knowledge, devotion, and meditation.

Karma Yoga (selfless action)

• [Central principle] Perform dharma without egoic attachment

Jnana Yoga (knowledge and discernment)

Bhakti Yoga (devotion and surrender)

• [Pure bhakti includes and surpasses other paths]
• • [MYTAKE] [Mantra skepticism] I am still quite skeptical that chanting this mantra can have as much effect as the book says.
• [Light of knowledge] Kṛṣṇa gives sincere devotees the understanding/intelligence by which they can know and approach Him.

Stages / Milestones

Equinamity

• [Definition] Steady inner balance in success/failure, pleasure/pain, praise/blame; acting without being emotionally thrown off by opposites.

Yogi

• [Definition] One who is disciplined in yoga: controls mind and senses and links consciousness to the Divine through sustained practice.

Sage

• [Definition] A spiritually mature knower (muni/ṛṣi-like) who sees reality clearly and lives by wisdom rather than impulse.

Sthita-prajña

• [Definition] Literally "one of steady wisdom": a person firmly established in spiritual knowledge, free from restless desires, and stable in devotion.
• • [MYTAKE] [Emotional intelligence] I love this emphasis that hinduism has in emotional intelligence and controlling the senses even more than mere supression of them, because people's life philosophies are so much based on justifying their desires and impulses, whereas we know that it creates suffering to them.
• • [MYTAKE] This reminds me a lot of a CEO, or a BJJ black belt. All of them need to keep composure under great pressure.
